While alpine valleys urbanization of Northern French Alps is still growing, much of the area is covered by mountain ranges and natural landscape reach up to 60% of the total land area.This mountainous area has significant freshwater resources witch profit for hydroelectric power, second country source for energy with 14% of the total energy production. But all the most favourable sites for hydroelectricity production are already used.
How then can hydroelectricity still be used and developed at the local scale? Due to socio-economic development, drinking water and waste water pipes networks significantly increased, as the number of local projects for using these pipes network for hydroelectricity production.
The main aim in this pilot area within the project recharge.green is to test integrated spatial decision support systems on expected levels of territory management, with significant uncertainties and sensitivity of hydrological regimes to climatic changes: (1) Megève municipality: ski resort, hydroelectricity energy production from drinking water pipes and perspective to use it more intensively, conflicts between wetlands preservation and socio-economic development; (2) Valloire municipality: mountainous municipality with intense tourism activities and temporal variability of waste water input; (3) Belledonne mountain massif: several municipalities facing problem of energy and water supply, some micro-hydroelectricity power plants, Regional Park framework.
